NYSP Handgun Recertification

The NYS Safe Act requires that you must recertify your permit every five years. If you had a
permit when the law passed in January 2013 then you must recertify by January 2018.

Here is the link to the NYSP web site for recertification of your handgun permit. If your permit was issued before January 15, 2013, you are required to complete your recertification before January 31, 2018 . Share with all you know so no one gets jammed up over this silliness. Permit holders will NOT be notified by the NYSP. Permit holders have to remember to do this on their own every 5 years.

A note on Handgun permit recertification- from Yates Co. Ron Spike:

The Sheriff's Office has been advised that the State web site is now operational and re-certification letters have begun to be mailed to licensees across the state.
The new regulations, part of the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act hastily  passed in 2013, include deadlines for firearm owners based on the date that they originally were issued their license.
Take note that if one's license was issued before Jan. 15, 2013, the deadline to submit a recertification application is Jan. 31, 2018.
If one's license was issued on, or after Jan. 15, 2013, the deadline to recertify is five years after the date the license was issued.
There is no extra cost from the state associated with renewing one's pistol permit. However, it appears that Permit holders have to remember to do this every 5 years. Counties do not have any control over the re-certification process and with that said we will help our permit holders in any way we can.
Recertification can be done online by visiting the NYS Police Pistol Permit Recertification website and following the instructions. It can also be done through the mail by filling out the paper form (available online at state police website and then mailing the completed form to New York State Police, Pistol Permit Bureau, Building 22, 1220 Washington Ave., Albany NY 12226-2252.
If you have any questions regarding the re-certification process, that you call the New York State Police Pistol Permit Bureau at 1-855-529-4867 or visit their website at https://firearms.troopers.ny.gov/pprecert/welcome.faces
This is yet another “Safe Act” provision affecting law-abiding citizens. Criminals and those who unlawfully possess handguns are not concerned with the “Safe Act” nor any re-certification process.
As your Sheriff if my office can help in any way please don't hesitate to contact me. Additionally I thank you for our past partnerships and the handgun safety training we did in 2016. We look forward to continuing this effort in safety and applicable legal education with SCOPE.
Best wishes,
Sheriff Ron Spike
